About
Our Mission is to Support Firefighters During Critical Life Events
EST. 2022
IN TIMES OF NEED
Firefighters dedicate over a third of their lives to protecting our city. Recognizing their service, Battalion Chief Alexander (Xan) Glover, Jr. spent more than 10 years envisioning a way to support these brave men and women in critical times of need. In March 2022, with the assistance of Brady Wilson and Fire Chief Brandon Broadhead, his vision became a reality with the creation of the Homewood Fire Department Foundation.
This nonprofit organization, a 501(c)(3), was established to fill critical gaps. While the city provides salaries and benefits through its general budget, there are limits to what city funds can cover. The Foundation steps in to assist with non-budgeted needs, including:
- Support for injured firefighters
- Bereavement assistance
- Support for childbirth, retirement, and other life events
- Donations for equipment or training the city cannot afford
The Foundation also aims to build a strong fund account. The main fundraiser for the Foundation is the
First Responders 5K. Proceeds from this event are shared between the nonprofit foundations for the police and fire departments, helping both groups serve their members. Beyond financial support, the Foundation is a way for the Homewood community to show its gratitude.
By contributing, residents can ensure their firefighters feel supported and appreciated—on and off the job. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those who risk so much to protect us.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Honoring Chief John Bresnan Through Scholarships
The Homewood Fire Department Foundation proudly offers a scholarship program in memory of the late Fire Chief John Bresnan. This scholarship is available to every child of a Homewood Fire Department member who graduates high school and pursues further education. Whether attending a technical school, community college, university, or paramedic program, eligible students can receive support for their post-graduation journey.
Our goal is to grow this scholarship fund to $100,000 by 2030, a campaign we call "100 by 2030." This investment will ensure lasting support for the children of our firefighters.
The Foundation assists the Firefighter's Association in funding the annual Bresnan Memorial Scholarship, awarded to a Homewood High School senior that may be graduating that year. This scholarship continues Chief Bresnan’s legacy of dedication to education and service within our community. Through these scholarships, we honor Chief Bresnan’s memory while supporting the next generation of learners and leaders. You can donate directly to this fund HERE.
